Many famous American and Sports Heroes came to light during the 1920's, mainly because of the new technologies like the radio, which became a household item. One reason that sports became so popular was because millions of Americans listened to live broadcasts of sports and current events with their families daily.
The Nickname of the 1920s was called “the Golden Age of Sports” (233, Roberts). This time period was difficult because Americans were still in shock from the war, and sports helped because they showed the greatness that Americans possessed. Many young kids looked up to famous sports players like Babe Ruth. |
Another reason that sports became so popular was because of people like Damon Runyon and Grantland Rice who wrote about sports and published their works nationally. Grantland Rice also narrated sports over the radio.
An American Hero
Charles Lindbergh was a pilot who was famous for flying a plane from New York to France, by himself. His plane was called Spirit of St. Louis and he was known to be the first person ever to make the journey by himself. This showed Americans how powerful the new technology was and that they could also do the impossible. Therefore, Charles Lindbergh was made a hero.
